Stolen World is a meticulously researched and well-written account of the illegal reptile trade from the 60's to the 90's. The information and stories the book is based upon "is derived from interviews, court records and published and unpublished interviews." This is a stunning book. The characters are real. The chase by law enforcement is real. The perpetrators efforts to evade prosecution is real. I liked the book very much as a whole except the chapter, "What Happened to the Plowshare Tortoises?" left me gasping for breath. It was more detail than I wanted to know about plowshare tortoises. However, Stolen World was a very interesting and good read which is similar in vein to a similar book on the market called The Lizard King. The conclusion was very good. The prosecution of those who smuggle reptiles and other animals into the US and Europe is largely based upon international treaties--like CITES-- signed by many but not all countries around the world. But some countries which signed onto CITES do not cooperate with foreign law enforcement thus some reptile smugglers, according to the story, are out of the reach of law enforcement. Interestingly, illicit reptile and/or animal smuggling for huge profit is only the tip of the enforcement iceberg. Wildlife law enforcement, according to the author, are more concerned about the environmental damage and biodiversity loss which is caused by the illicit wildlife trade of which they are largely unable to do anything about. However, they are better able to go after the smugglers themselves thus indirectly work to protect the environment, animal welfare and biodiversity. Enjoy. This is a really entertaining and informative piece. Smith spent over a decade writing it. She built relationships with Molt, Crutchfield and others. So the information is first rate.If you liked The Lizard King by Bryan Christy then you will enjoy this because it covers some of the people covered in that book that were tangential to the Van Nostrands.The lives these people led were nothing short of an Odyssey. I like how Smith didn’t really judge her subjects and just covered. I think that the obsessions these people have are really hard to articulate to those without it. It’s easy to explain why someone would be obsessed with cars and jewelry, it’s not so easy to explain an obsession for searching for, owning and smuggling arcane reptiles that are often dangerous. It really does require a whole book to bring that explanation to shape. And she does a great job at it.
